Meat sellers’ strike enters 4th day

The ongoing strike of the city meat sellers entered fourth constitutive day yesterday leaving consumers in trouble of getting fresh meat. 

The inadequate supply and increase in demand caused the prices of chicken and fish to rise at the wholesale markets.
The owners of different hotels, restaurants claimed that they are forced to stop selling some of the delicacies like mutton ‘biryanis’ and beef ‘teharis’. They were seen only selling chicken ‘tikkas’ and ‘kababs’. The meat sellers went on a 6-day strike from Monday protesting what they alleged extortion in the name of tax at the capital’s main cattle market at Gabtali They vowed to continue their strike until the authorities accept their demands like end to arbitrary collection of toll in the name of tax on cattle.
Meanwhile, leaders of Meat Traders Association (BMTA) said the strike would continue till Saturday. They will announce their next course of action at a press conference at 11 am on Saturday at the DRU.  Some 5000 meat sellers as well as their employees and the cattle traders, including the merchants of raw hide and tanners that may harm the exports as well as the pharmaceutical industries needing the by products like bones of animal carcasses to produce medicines, gels for capsules, the BMTA leader said.
