Lascelles late show keeps Newcastle top

AFP

AFP,  LONDON: Jamaal Lascelles scored an 81st-minute equaliser to earn Newcastle United a 2-2 draw at Norwich City on Tuesday and keep his side at the top of the English Championship.
Rafael Benitez's men went ahead after just 24 seconds at Carrow Road through Ayoze Perez, but Norwich equalised courtesy of Jacob Murphy.
A mistake by visiting goalkeeper Karl Darlow allowed Cameron Jerome to put Norwich 2-1 up in the 17th minute, but with time running out, skipper Lascelles volleyed in the equaliser from a narrow angle.
Lascelles's goal kept Newcastle a point clear of second-place Brighton and Hove Albion, who could only draw 1-1 at home to Ipswich Town.
Luke Chambers gave Ipswich an unexpected lead with an eighth-minute header, but Tomer Hemed hit back for Brighton with a penalty shortly before the half hour.
Huddersfield Town closed to within four points of the English second tier's automatic promotion places after twice coming from behind to win 3-2 at bottom club Rotherham United.
Rotherham led twice, through Sam Ajayi and a Tom Adeyemi long-ranger, but Huddersfield hit back on each occasion via Joe Lolley and Elias Kachunga before Tommy Smith snaffled a stoppage-time winner.
Fourth-place Reading also closed on the top two after coming from behind to beat Brentford 3-2.
Trailing 2-1, Reading equalised through Danny Williams in the 77th minute and claimed victory four minutes later when substitute Roy Beerens struck.
Fifth-place Leeds United secured a 2-1 home win over Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday tightened their grip on the fourth and final play-off place by edging Blackburn Rovers 2-1.
There were also wins for Wigan Athletic, Cardiff City, who edged Derby County by the odd goal in seven at the iPro Stadium, Fulham and Preston North End.
But Steve Bruce's Aston Villa, relegated from the Premier League last season, have now gone eight league games without victory after a 3-1 home defeat by Barnsley that left them 16th.
