RAJSHAHI: Speakers at a meeting here on Tuesday said protecting the children alongside freeing them from all sorts of violation, repression, deprivation and early marriage has become indispensable for building a healthy and knowledge-based future generation, reports BSS.
They said children especially coming from the disadvantaged and underprivileged families must be protected from all sorts of labour, violence, repression and oppression so that they could make themselves competent to serve the nation.
The speakers were addressing the first Child Welfare Board Meeting of Paba Upazila at its conference hall. Lady’s Organization for Social Welfare (LOFS) organized the meeting in association with Bangladesh Child Rights Forum.
Chairman of Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank Nazrul Islam and Managing Director of Rajshahi WASA Ajahar Ali addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Paba UNO Selim Hossain in the chair.
During her concept paper presentation, Shahnaz Parveen Luckey, Executive Director of LOFS, gave an overview of the board’s formation and activities.
Upazila Chairman Ashraful Haque, Education Officer Saiful Islam, Women Affairs Officer Hosney Laila and Social Service Officer Abu Taher also spoke. LOFS Vice-president moderated the discussion.
Nazrul Islam said the present government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is very much positive towards protecting the child rights and urged the field level government and non-government organizations concerned to supplement the government endeavor. He termed the children learning as the foundation of all higher education and said their teaching and learning process must be effective and kids- friendly. Physical and mental development of children couldn’t be possible until they are protected from violence and deprivation from their early childhood, he added.
The practice of child marriage is very damaging, especially for girls. It seems that girls are treated as burden to society, mostly in rural areas. Terming child marriage as gross violation of human rights, he said children are being married off frequently, despite multifarious interventions by the government and non-government organisations concerned.
It is vital to increase awareness regarding the negative impacts of early marriage with the help of the mass media.
