The radio has played an important part in society throughout the entire 20th century, and it still continues to play a vital role in the age of digitised information and advanced communication technologies in Bangladesh like elsewhere in the world. This fact was once again echoed in the observance of the World Radio Day – 2017 through various daylong programmes under the banner ‘Radio is you’, day before yesterday at Rangpur.
Speakers attending the seminar held at Rangpur discussed on how Bangladesh Betar had been playing a vital role in disseminating information and knowledge ensuring rights of the common people. Most importantly, focusing on its potentials—the chief guest also the Divisional Commissioner of Rangpur, stated how the age-old technology has been playing a crucial role turning Bangladesh into a middle income country by informing people about agriculture, health, gender, education, trade, weather and many other socio-cultural issues.
We need to build up on the proven and visible success of radio. Bangladesh Radio authorities should, therefore, prepare more time befitting and need-based quality programmes to ensure its tangible contribution with regard to our millennium and sustainability development goals. It will help Bangladesh turn into a middle income nation by 2021 and subsequently, a developed country by 2041.
However, in Bangladesh the third model of radio broadcasting besides commercial and public broadcasting has also been playing a significant role. Particularly, the linkage between the community people and local-level community radio stations are getting strengthened day-by-day. Community Radio has now become an integral part of the lives of many. It has given a voice to people who do not have access to mainstream media to express their views on community development.
Furthermore, it has become the instrument for livelihood of many within our rural communities. Privately owned radio stations too have been quite successful in delivering healthy entertainments to several audience groups. The government should also integrate the private and community radios so as to effectively address the 21st century challenges. Given the socio-economic reality of Bangladesh, we must make the best use of all forms of radio.
