Expanding internet coverage

There is no doubt that spurt in the number of internet users in the country is a positive development

It is good to know that free Wi Fi facility is now available on the Rajshahi University campus for quite some time now, albeit on a limited scale. According to a report of this newspaper yesterday, the free access to internet has streamlined the academic activities. Students who could not afford a prepaid package but have a smartphone in their hand now have wider access to information and online learning. Students’ official or other activities have gathered momentum through the installation of Wi-Fi: they can now see their result and pay their academic fees with the help of the new internet coverage. 
For creating an IT generation with the promise of building a ‘Digital Bangladesh’, bringing Rajshahi University under free Wi-Fi coverage deserves thanks, and indeed emulating the example of this university, the relevant government authorities can bring the other public universities under Wi-Fi facility to help the students connect with the wider world. The private universities also offer the same facility to the students. In the second phase of IT expansion among the students, colleges could be brought to the internet network. This kind of expansion would surely open up huge possibilities for development of the country. 
Overall, the number of internet users in the country is increasing, but significantly, only a small percentage of the total internet users in the country use broadband internet and the rest whole connect themselves with the worldwide network through mobile operators. One reason for this is the operation of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that give broadband service is limited only to some major cities of the country including the capital. 
There is no doubt that the spurt in the number of internet users in the country is a positive development. This means Bangladesh is increasingly getting connected with the rest of the world and, barring some few of its negative effects, this networking is helping people in gathering knowledge and information, education and business through widening of the connectivity. The internet is also act as a source of recreation for many people.
It is hardly needed any mention that benefits of internet are available to only those people who have a computer, either for Desktop or Laptop or a smartphone. It is the poor and backward section of population, and they form the majority, is largely remaining outside the networking system. There are millions of people in Bangladesh who have not even heard of a thing called internet, and unless more poor people are taken out of their cycles of poverty, given education and thus creating opportunities for economic activities, the aim of creating a ‘Digital Bangladesh’ will not bear greater significance for the nation.
