In a bid to strengthen and enrich the Bangladesh spin battery with variety of spinners, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and Robi Axiata Limited jointly took up an initiative to explore an array of potential spinners from grass-root across the country.
The initiative is going to take place at different 69 venues including 64 districts coupled with five outlets in Dhaka Metro since Tuesday. The day-long competition will be held in three phases-District trial, divisional trial and national trial.
BCB director and its vice president Mahbub Anam reveled all at a press conference at the Media Block of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.
The phase-1 will be ‘district trial’ which will be held in between February 14-28 under the supervision of divisional coach and assistant district coaches, the phase from where not more than 25 spinners including females and physically challenged spinners will be selected at each district venue.
The phase-2 will be ‘divisional trail’ to be taken place at different 10 venues in between March 3 to 17 under the guideline of BCB’s central technical team, the phase from where maximum 60 spinners will be selected from all the venues.
The phase-3 will be ‘national trial’ to be held at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) ground in Mirpur in between March 20 to 27. The phase will be conducted by BCB’s central technical team along with an international recognized spin coach, from where top 10 spinners to be selected and awarded.
“The lucky 10 best spinners of the ‘Khoj: The Number One Spinner’ campaign will be sent to BCB High Performance Unit for their further development. This year Australia-born coach Simon Helmot will conduct the exclusive HP programme,” Anam also said.
When asked what would be the selection criteria, the vice president said that spin ability, legal and smooth bowling action along with unorthodox and effective bowling will be looked at sharply.
“We have a good number of left-arm and right-arm spinners in the current stocks of the national and other team’s line-up. But this time we will try to find some other types of spinners outside of the regular ambit,” Mahbub told in response to a query.
He was accompanied by Khandokar Ashraful Haque, vice president of brand and market communication of Robi Axiata Limited and BCB chief executive Nizam Uddin Chowdhury at the presser.
“This year we have also taken this joint venture after its previous successful campaign ‘Fast Bowler Hunt’,” Haque said, adding that ‘Khoj: The Number One Spinner’ campaign meanwhile created huge furore amongst the young potential spinners of the country. A total of over 12,000 hopeful spinners registered their names to take part in the competition after the outset of the procedures.
