35 gold bars seized at Shahjalal airport

Members of customs intelligence yesterday noon seized 35 gold bars weighing 3.5 kg at Shahjalal International Airport in the capital and detained one in connection with the smuggling, reports BSS. The arrestee Md Habibur Rahman, 27, of Gazipur studies in Malaysia and confessed his involvement in the gold smuggling in the primary interrogation.
“Tipped off, members of preventive team detained Rahman as he was trying to pass through the Green Channel area in the airport hastily. He came from Singapore via Bangkok to evade our surveillance. After searching his body and luggage, we found the gold bars worth around Taka 1.75 crore,” joint commissioner SM Sohel Rahman of customs told BSS.
Two cases were filed in this regard and the arrestee was handed over to Airport Police Station.
Another report adds, A mobile court has sentenced an Ansarman and an informal taxi operator for their proven involvement in a passenger baggage theft at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), country’s main gateway.
Ansarman Saiful Islam has been awarded a month of jail term while the supervisor of a rent-a-car Shahin has been sentenced for three months as they together stole the baggage on Sunday, assistant police super of Airport Armed Police Battalion Anis Uzzaman told BSS yesterday.
He said Saiful has been sacked from his job and the lost bag has been recovered and returned to its owner, Rasel Chowdhury. Based on a complaint from Rasel on Sunday, police said, they scanned the airport video footage and identified the duo involved in the crime.
