Those who wrote off Bangladesh’s chance to stretch the Test to fifth day ahead of the one-off Test against India, the Mushfiqur Rahim-led team showed a valiant effort to swallow their own pill.
The Bangladesh not only stretched the Test to final day, but also made India worried till the last day of averting the defeat. On an increasingly deteriorating pitch against a two sublime spinners and relentless pace attack, they showed such composure what the other opponents of Indian in the recent past couldn’t do.
Most of the Test in India lately has been ended inside fourth day with India sealing comfortable victories. This one in terms of run seemed to be a big defeat but Bangladesh were able to keep Indian bowlers more than 100 overs on the field in both of the innings. That’s where Bangladesh is different than the other opponents of India.
But still there was regret. The regret is for the first innings in which Bangladesh made several mistakes to let India rack up a gigantic total of 687. There was some easy catch drops. There was an easy stumping miss by captain who also missed a catch behind the wicket. Murali Vjay, Cheteshwar Pujara and Wriddhiman Saha also got life in the initial part of their innings and made it fat. Viajy scored 108 runs after surviving from an easy run out on 35.
Pujara offered catch behind the wicket on 11 and went on to score 83. Saha survived from a stumping out on 4 to score an unbeaten 106.
‘What if’ if those don’t happen—is now the common regret in Bangladesh tent after they pushed India vigorously.
Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim admitted their first innings blunder actually made the difference.
“Obviously, I thought, in the first innings," Mushfiqur Rahim said, "we created a lot of opportunities with the bowling. If we had restricted India to 550 or 600, we could have had a chance. It's quite tough out there in the second innings, India have a lot of options, not only among the spinners but the fast bowlers as well.
Hopefully we learn from this and come up with better performance,” he said.
The captain himself was culpable for most of the mistakes. But he is eventually responsible to save Bangladesh from a humiliating defeat.
His 127 in the first innings surely would be considered to be his finest century as he not only helped Bangladesh put up a big total (388) in the first innings, defying the pressure of 687 runs but also his knock ensured India wouldn’t get enough time to enforce follow-on. Inspired by captain’s knock, Bangladesh also survived more than 100 overs in the second innings, making Indian bowlers toil more than 100 overs in both of the innings.
That’s a victory in a sense against No.1 ranked team who has got used to end the Test inside three or four days.
“I'm really proud of the boys, even the tail-enders showed really good character. Little things are what we need to improve on. Couple of matches coming up in Sri Lanka. Hopefully we capitalise there. We batted more than 100 overs each innings, and Mehedi batted and bowled well. Taijul bowled well.
But I think our fielding let us down. If we can compete for five days, we can push the big boys,” he said.
Mushfiqur Rahim however reiterated the demand of getting more Tests.
“As a Test team we were vulnerable. But if you watch our game in the last three series, you saw we didn’t give our opposition respite. Most of the Tests in the recent time, we stretched to the fifth day.
Yes we could play well in the second innings in some of the Test but when you will play Test cricket regularly, you are bound to improve.”
