Students of different schools in the capital are worried as they are yet to get all textbooks, though distribution of free books began on the first day of the year in a festive environment. The National Curriculum Textbook Board (NCTB) insisted that there is no shortage of books and blamed the crisis on "mismanagement" in distribution. Students said they have not got important books like Bangla, Mathematics, Higher Mathematics, Science, Anondo Path, and Agriculture, which is hampering their learning. They have purchased guidebooks to get over the non-availability of textbooks and have taken admission in coaching centres as they do not want to miss out on studies.
Worried guardians decided it was better to buy guidebooks and send their children to coaching centres. Teachers said they are taking classes based on their experience and having recourse to old books until they get the new ones.Students said despite the efforts of the teachers, they do not have any option but to buy guidebooks and read the lesson at home or get admitted to coaching centres.
Some of the school authorities said they could not hand over all textbooks to students as they still have not got all the books, though 40 days have passed. Some of the school authorities said they recently got some books, but are yet to hand them over to students.
On the other hand, some of the schools that require the English version have not got all books.
About the English version books, the NCTB said they do not know the exact demand of the English version books as they are not aware about the number of such schools. It attributed the delay to such lack of knowledge. Ismail Hossain, a student of Class VIII of New Model Bohumukhi High School, said he did not get Ananda Path, while another student of Class VII of the same school said he did not get the Agriculture book.
Fahim Rahman, a student of Class VI of BIAM Model School and College, said he did not get Charu Path, Elementary Science, Mathematics, English for Today and Bangladesh Global Science books.
“Our teachers are taking the help of old books. But I can't review the lesson at home for not having the books. So, I have bought a guidebook. I wouldn't have bought the guidebook, had I got all books,” he added.
Subarna Pal, a guardian whose two children study in Class VI and Class VIII at BIAM Model School and College, said: “We're worried for not having got all books. The teachers are taking classes with
old books.” “We are not dependent on the school. How will students make up for the loss if they don’t get books? So, I have bought guidebooks and admitted my kids to a coaching centre,” she added.
“We’ve got the English version books for Classes VI, VII and VIII, but have not distributed them. We’re yet to get the Higher Maths and Bangladesh and Global Studies books,” Prof. Kalyanmaya Sarker, principal in-charge of BIAM Model School and College, told The Independent yesterday.
“We still don’t know when we will get the remaining books. But the teachers are taking classes based on their experience,” he said.
The principal of the Motijheel Ideal School and College, Dr Shahan Ara Begum, told The Independent that they did not get some of the textbooks, such as Anada Path, which is hampering teaching.
“Distribution of free books is good. But mismanagement in distribution is making the students suffer. How will the syllabus be completed in time?” she said.
Mushtaq Ahmed Bhuiyan, controller of distribution of the NCTB, said: “There is no shortage of books, but there might have been some mismanagement in distribution. So, some books might not have reached schools. We have sent letters to deputy directors of secondary education to co-ordinate distribution of books from the upazila to the district level.” “Some schools might have got extra books. They will exchange them with other schools where there is a shortage. We have sent Ananda Path for Classes VII and VIII at the upazila level. Students will get it soon. If we get any news of shortage of books, we’ll take quick action,” he added. About the English version books, Bhuiyan said: “We’ve printed seven lakh such books. There may be some shortage because we don’t know the exact number of books required.”
