A court in Patuakhali yesterday sentenced Shahidul Alam Talukdar, former MP from Patuakhali-2 constituency, to nine years’ imprisonment in a corruption case, reports UNB. Judge Basu Deb Roy of the Special Session’s Judge Court also ordered confiscation of the former MP’s property and fined him Tk 1 lakh. He will have to serve six months more in prison if he fails to pay the penalty. Shahidul was standing on the dock when the judge pronounced the verdict. Lutfur Rahman, deputy director of Patuakhali office of the Anti Corruption Commission, filed the case against the former MP on April 25, 2010 for amassing wealth worth Tk 23 lakh illegally and concealing information of his wealth in the statement submitted to the anti-graft body.
