Over 34 percent adolescent girls of the country are victims of sexual abuse, State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki told Parliament yesterday citing a survey report, reports UNB. “As per the ‘Violence against Women Survey 2015’ conducted by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, 34.2 percent adolescent girls, aged 10-14, were subjected to sexual abuse while 30.9 percent endure physical torture some time in their lives,” she said replying to a tabled question from Awami League MP Momotaz Begom (Manikganj-2).
The junior minister, however, said her ministry has taken various measures to prevent repression against women and children.
As part of the measures, one-stop crisis centres (OCCs) have been set up in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Sylhet, Barisal, Khulna, Rangpur and Faridpur medical college hospitals to provide medical treatment, legal services, counselling, police assistance, shelter and rehabilitation to the victims in a coordinated manner, she said.
