With an uphill task to save the match on an increasingly deteriorating pitch against a relentless India bowling attack, Bangladesh fought hard on the fifth and final day of the Hyderabad Test before going down by 208 runs. They made India bowlers working hard for almost every wicket even though it was not enough to prevent one of the most successful home Test bowling pairs of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja from leaving a telling impact.
Along with them, Ishant Sharma swung the old ball to an uncanny degree to ensure Bangladesh’s resistance would not last till the last session of the match.
The three combined to snuff out all Bangladesh wickets, wrapping up the visitors for 250 in their second innings to seal sixth straight series for India and stretched the unbeaten run to 19 Tests. Resuming the day 103 for three, Bangladesh received a major setback in the third over of the day as they lost Shakib Al Hasan who added just one to his overnight total to be out for 22.
Shakib though of late has been throwing his wicket away, but it was the kind of delivery, he could hardly anything to resist. With plenty of turn and bounce on offer, Virat Kohli brought in five close-in fielders around the bat with Jadeja bowling round the wicket. The ball pitched on one of the footmarks and took off to kiss Shakib Al Hasan's glove and was taken by Cheteshwar Pujara at short leg. Then the resistance came from overnight unbeaten batsman Mahmudullah Riyad and centurion of first innings Mushfiqur Rahim. They began cautiously with a definite plan for Ashwin and Jadeja in mind. They moved their feet well against those dangerous pair and hit some sublime cover drive. The serenity with which they were playing, suddenly it raised a prospect of averting defeat. But Mushfiqur all on a sudden became brain-fizzed to offer a leading edge and threw his wicket to bring an end to a 56-run partnership with Mahmudullah. He scored 23.
Mushfiqur’s dismissal almost made India’s victory inevitable. But Mahmudullah held his ground with immense patience.
While Ashwin and Jadjea tested Bangladesh batsman, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav made the ball reverse-swing to make the life hell. Being pressure to score and end his run draught, Mahmudullah never let him bog-down. He brought up his first half-century after nine innings with a streaky four past the slips. He and Sabbir ended the morning session without any trouble as Bangladesh added 99 runs. However Ishant was rewarded for his good work in the day as he was bowling with pace, control and aggression. He took out Sabbir, 22, trapping him in front - a referral going against the batsman, before bouncing out the only threat between India and win, Mahmudullah with an accurate bouncer. Mahmudullah’s 64 off 149 was laced with seven boundaries. The eighth wicket stand between Mehedi Hasan and Kamrul Islam Rabbi frustrated India, scoring 17 runs in 14 overs and a catch going down, before Jadeja dented them further with the new ball, seeing the back of a defiant Mehedi for 23. The amount of drift Jadeja and Ashwin received was too good for the Bangladesh lower-order. Kamrul Islam however hung on there making three off 70. India declared the first innings for 687 for six before Mushfiqur Rahim’s valiant 127 helped Bangladesh pile up 388 and forced India batting again. India declared the second innings on 159 for four, setting an improbable 459 runs target for Bangladesh.
