Khaleda tells party advisers

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday called upon the party advisers to work for strengthening the party at grassroots level to force the government to hold the next polls under a neutral government acceptable to all. An adviser, who was present at the meeting, quoted Khaleda as saying, "Strengthening the organisation is more important than waging a movement." "If you can strengthen the party, the government will be compelled to accept our demand to hold the next polls under an impartial administration," she was quoted as saying.
The BNP chief made the call at a meeting of the advisers at her Gulshan office yesterday. Some professionals and former bureaucrats were also present at the meeting that began at 8:50pm and lasted for over two hours. The former premier gave a patient hearing to his party advisers, who discussed the latest development in the political arena including formation of the Election Commission with a ‘controversial person’ as its chief.
This was the first meeting of the 73-member advisory council chaired by Khaleda Zia and held about a year after the last party council. Most of the councilors, however, were absent at the meeting.
Apart from Khaleda’s advisers, Gonoshasthaya Kendra Founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, Engineer ANH Akhter Hossain, music composer Gazi Mazharul Anwar, lawyers AJ Mohammad Ali, Afzal H Khan, Toimur Alam Khandaker, former bureaucrats Mushfiqur Rahman, Abdul Halim, Shohidul Islam, Zohurul Islam, educationists Prof Shaheda Rafique, Prof Tajmeri Islam, Prof Sukomal Barua, Prof Mamun Ahmed and Prof Shamsul Alam were present at the meeting.
Earlier on Saturday, Khaleda also had a meeting with her party’s vice-chairmen.
After the formation of the new EC, the BNP chief also held meetings with her party’s policymakers and the 20-party alliance partners to work out the party’s next line of action.
