College student killed ‘by rivals’    
OUR CORRESPONDENT, Jessore

A college student was beaten to death reportedly by rivals at Navaran in Sharsha upazila on Saturday night.
The victim was identified as Biplob, 18, a student of Navaran Degree College and son of Nazrul Islam, a resident of Jirengachha village of the upazila.
Maniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Sharsha Police Station, said Shahanur and Hossain, both residents of Jirengachha village, had long been at loggerheads over establishing dominance in the area.
As sequel to the problem, supporters of Shahanur group, equipped with lethal weapons, attacked Biplob and beat him up mercilessly around 9.30pm, leaving him critically injured.He was admitted to Sharsha upazila health complex where he succumbed to his injures.
Outraged by the incident, Biplob’s supporters blocked Jessore-Benapole road for one hour.
On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.

Man ‘kills self’ after ‘killing’ wife
Gaibandha: A man reportedly committed suicide after killing his wife over a family feud at Birinchi village in Gobindaganj upazila early yesterday, reports UNB.
The deceased were identified as Jalal Uddin and his wife Pakhi Begum, residents of Birinchi village.The couple locked into an altercation over family matters at the dead of night, said neighbours.
As they stopped the fighting suddenly, the neighbours smelled something wrong and went to the house only to see Pakhi’s body lying on the bed and Jalal hanging from the ceiling of the room.
On information, police rushed in, recovered the bodies and sent those to hospital for autopsy, said Fazlur Rahman, in-charge of Boiragirhat Police Investigation Centre of Gobindaganj.
Jalal might have killed himself after strangulating his wife to death, Fazlur added.
‘Jasim Pollimela’ ends in Faridpur
FARIDPUR: Month long Jasim Pollimmela (village fair) concluded on Saturday evening here at the premises of poet Jasimuddin’s ancestral home at Gobindapur in the suburb of the town, reports BSS.
Faridpur Jasim Foundation and District Administration organised the fair coinciding the 114th birth anniversary of the immortal folk poet Jasimuddin.
Faridpur Zilla Parishad Chairman Md. Lokman Hossain Mridha was the chief guest in the concluding function held at the ‘Jasim Mancha’ while Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rev) Dr. Kamruzzaman Selim was in the chair.
