India were upbeat to wrap up their fifth straight Test victory and stretch their unbeaten streak to 18 matches today as they saw a considerable amount of turn and bounce on offer for the spinners.
By the end of the day four, India reduced Bangladesh to 103 for three after setting a target of 459 to win. Their spin duo—Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja then extracted huge assistance from the pitch to send three Bangladeshi batsmen out and looked always dangerous to take the wickets at any moment.
“I think ball has started turning now. Probably the wicket is slightly on the slower side but it has opened up and so there will be more assistance for the spinners tomorrow,” said India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara. “We expected the ball to turn from day three but it started turning from day four. We bowled as a good bowling unit because it wasn’t an easy wicket, they bowled with a lot of patience, they had to work hard to get them out.”
India wrapped up Bangladesh’s first innings for 388 to take a 299 runs lead. They could enforce follow-on as the visitors were 199 runs away from avoiding the follow-on. However India captain Virat Kohli decided against it.
“I think the idea was to because the bowlers we had bowled more than 100 overs. We had fielded for more than 100 overs so they were given a little break for the session in a bid to recover,” Pujara explained.
“When I went into bat the idea was to score as many runs as possible, we were looking forward to 150 to 200 runs on the board. I was just batting freely we just wanted to express ourselves.”
The Bangladesh though made a huge resistance in the first innings led by its captain Mushfiqur Rahim, Pujara hoped that the condition will remain difficult for Bangladeshi batsman to come up with any resistance like the first innings.
“We are hopeful of getting those seven wickets as early as possible, they bated well in the first innings but it was a difficult condition for our bowlers. So we are very hopeful that we will get those seven wickets in next couple of sessions.”
