Disorders of the ear, nose and throat are considered as a group of medical conditions by health professionals, as these organs are contiguous in anatomical placement in the human body and their disorders sometimes overlap between the organs. For example an infection in the nose can spread to the throat and onward to the auditory canal. These diseases affect the young and old, rich and poor, irrespective of race and colour. Some of these diseases, such as colds, flu and allergies affecting the nose and throat are simple enough conditions to be treated at home under doctor’s advice and even with alternative medicinal prophylaxis.
Others need hospitalization at the onset of the disease. These diseases are not age-specific except for tumours and cancers of these organs. These diseases are widespread globally and attack persons rich or poor, young or old and of all races. This week’s cover story is on Ear, Nose and Throat disorders.
This is also because there is more information and medical knowledge available about these diseases than may be for any other similarly-grouped diseases. As has been said, there are hundreds of diseases extant in the world but there are known cures for only twenty-six. And among these twenty-six diseases, that much is known about are the ear, nose and throat diseases.
