Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed yesterday said Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have reached a consensus to sign free-trade agreement (FTA), reports BSS.
"Both the countries have taken necessary initiative to reach the deal . . . our export to Sri Lanka would be boosted after the FTA," added the minister.
He made the optimism after having a meeting with Sri Lankan Ambassador to Bangladesh Yasoja Gunasekera at his ministry office this noon.
Bangladeshi paper, pharmaceuticals and potato have huge potentialities in Sri Lankan market, but duty complexities has been appeared as big barrier for those items, opined Tofail.
He said discussion is going on to remove the barrier, and hoped it would be solved soon.
In the last fiscal, Bangladesh exported products worth US$ 30.45 million to Sri Lanka against the import of US$ 45 million.
Senior secretary of the ministry Hedayetullah Al Mamoon, additional secretary (FTA) M Shafikul Islam and joint secretary (FTA) Munir Chowdhury, among others, were present.
