Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury yesterday said political will is a must to empower women and ensure their equal rights at all levels, reports UNB. Strong political commitment can help ensure women development and their financial solvency through taking effective and proper initiatives, she said while addressing the inaugural session of the three-day National Women’s Parliament at Amaravathi of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly and the Andhra Pradesh government jointly arranged the conference with the theme of ‘Empowering Women - Strengthening Democracy’, according a message received here.
Dr Shirin Sharmin said women’s participation in decision-making is a must and they must be given scope to lead in all sectors, including politics. She recalled that Bangladesh, under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, has already achieved development goals, including women empowerment and gender equity, announced by the United Nations.
Noting that people must be aware of parliamentary democracy and democratic governing system, the CPA chairperson said all should come forward to establish gender equity in the light of the values of democracy.
Indian Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, and Nobel Laureate and Buddhist spiritual leader Dalai Lama, among others, spoke on the occasion.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu met Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury at Taj Gateway Hotel.
