Bangladesh ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan became the quickest cricketer to achieve the double of 4000 runs and 200 wickets in one-day International cricket. Like many other feats, he is the first Bangladeshi player here as well to reach such a rare milestone which earlier was conquered by only six cricketers.
The world No.1 all-rounder’s record came in the third and deciding match against South Africa yesterday at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong. He reached the landmark by removing South African captain Hashim Amla who was deceived by the Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong. He reached the landmark by removing South African captain Hashim Amla who was deceived by the considerable turn and bounce which Shakib derived from the pitch.
Shakib was just two wickets shy of achieving the feat, going into the match. He firstly scalped Faf Du Plessis, the best South African batsman in the ongoing tour. His attempted sweep against a turning delivery caused his dismissal and gave Shakib 199th ODI wicket.
By taking out Amla, He becomes the seventh player in the world to earn the accolades of earning the double. But he is the fastest to reach the milestone in terms of playing number of matches. Later he claimed another wicket to finish the match at 3 for 33.
He needed just 156 matches to reach the landmark while the previous fastest Pakistan’s Abdul Razzak needed 204 matches. Razzak however is the youngest to reach the landmark. Upon reaching the milestone, Razzak was 26 years old. Shakib, currently aged 28, is the second youngest to earn the feat.
New Zealand all-rounder Chris Carins needed 213 matches while Jacques Kallis, the South African stalwart took 221 matches to reach the double. Sanath Jayasuriya, Shahid Africa and Chris Harris needed 235, 238 and 244 ODIs respectively.
Sri Lankan opener Jayasuriya scored 13,430 runs playing 445 matches and scalped 323 wickets, South African all-rounder Jack Kallis played 328 matches but put on 11,579 with an average of 44.36, bagging 273 wickets in his kitty.
Pakistan’s all-rounder Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzak mustered 8,064 and 5080 runs from 398 and 265 matches, claiming 395 and 269 wickets respectively. New Zealand’s Chris Cairns captured 201 wickets in 215-match appearance with the scores of 4950, averaging 29.46.
Shakib Al Hasan played just 156 to enter the record book. Currently he has 4382 runs with an average of 35.33.
He is only second Bangladeshi player to take 200 wickets in ODI after Abdur Razzak who has 207 wickets under the belt. Since Razzak is not playing international cricket and has the remote possibility to get back into the side, Shakib is favourite to overhaul his wickets.
Bangladesh ODI skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza however followed Shakib with 199 (198 wickets for Bangladesh and one wicket for Aisa XI). But Mashrafe is unlikely to overcome Shakib, given the form and age.
He went wicket-less in the last two matches which raised a concern whether he could achieve the feat in this series. Ahead of the match, he had to face a question whether he lost his shine. Shakib said that getting wickets tough for him because batsmen tried not to charge him these days.
