NBR holds first ever conference for Deputy Commissioners of Taxes (DCT) at a conference yesterday promised to build a taxpayer friendly tax administration to create a business and investment sociable environment to ensure quality services and remove fear about tax among the people, reports BSS.
National Board of Revenue (NBR) organised the day-long conference for Deputy Tax Commissioners for the first time at the Officer’s Club in the capital. Former Governor of Bangladesh Bank and chairperson of the Board of Trustees of East West University Dr Mohammad Farashuddin attended the programme as chief guest while NBR chairman Md Nojibur Rahman was in the chair.
Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) president Abdul Matlub Ahmad and NBR member (tax administration) Md Abdur Razzaque also spoke at the conference. Commissioner Md Alamgir Hossain presented the keynote speech on ‘Building of a people friendly modern tax administration: our initiatives’.
In his speech Farashuddin highly appreciated the NBR for its success in collection of revenue and said the volume of tax-revenue was Tk 166 crore and the size of the national budget was Tk 782 crore in 1972. Now the size of the budget is Tk 2.5 lakh crore and NBR collected revenue amounting to Tk 1.55 lakh crore, he added.
“There are four crore families in the country but why we cannot collect tax from 10 per cent people of the country, who is responsible for it,” he questioned.
Farashuddin advised NBR to create a tax-friendly environment administration to encourage people to pay tax. The country is getting developed because the people are paying tax, the government is constructing mega Padma Bridge with taxpayers’ money, he added.
He said NBR is failing to realise Tk 32, 000 crore due to cases and suggested it to bring dynamism into the activities of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) for realising the money.
FBCCI president Abdul Matlub Ahmad said different programmes of NBR including its partnership initiatives are encouraging people to pay tax. He assured NBR of extending cooperation for increasing revenue collection.
