Bangladesh will bring back all its citizens, who were recently ‘rescued’ by Myanmar navy on an island bordering Thailand, after verifying their nationality, said Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque yesterday.
Quoting state-run Global New Light of Myanmar, Reuters reported on Tuesday that Myanmar's navy discovered 102 Bangladeshi migrants stranded for nearly a month on a southern island.
The 102 migrants, all men, were rescued between June 30 and July 12 and hailed from neighboring Bangladesh.
“We will do what we always do. We will seek consular access to the people, who, according to Myanmar, are from Bangladesh. We will verify their nationality and if they are Bangladeshis we will bring them back to the country,” Foreign Secretary Haque told The Independent yesterday over telephone.
To a question, he said that the Myanmar government has not yet notified Bangladesh.
But, said the Foreign Secretary that Bangladesh Embassy in Myanmar is contacting the Myanmar authorities in this regard.
