Bangladeshis have been offered new job and business opportunities in the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. The Cyprus government has offered permanent citizenship if one is willing to invest EUR 3 lakh (Tk. 2.50 crore) in the Eastern Mediterranean country. When this correspondent visited Lebanon as part of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence recently, he had the opportunity to interview the ambassador of Bangladesh in Cyprus, Abdul Motaleb Sarker. The latter said the Cyprus government has offered to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Bangladesh to strengthen business cooperation between the two countries.
“Cyprus has offered Bangladeshi citizens, especially businessmen, to invest only EUR 3 lakh for permanent residency,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for Bangladeshi businessmen,” he added. “When I met the Cyprus president and several ministers of the country, I offered their businessmen the opportunity to invest in Bangladesh. They also offered our Bangladeshi businessmen the opportunity to invest in their real estate and agriculture sectors,” he said.
“According to their needs, we may export Bangladeshi products like readymade garments and leather goods to Cyprus,” he noted.
“At present, we are exporting some readymade garments to Cyprus, whose population is 10 lakh,” Sarker added. “I have written to the president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), requesting his response in this regard. But I am yet to get a reply,” the ambassador said.
Sarker said that at least 100 workers go to Cyprus from Bangladesh every year. “If we accept the Cyprus government’s offer, we may be able to send skilled manpower to the country,” he added.
The ambassador said the Cyprus government has blocked the entry of Bangladeshi students in that country since 2013 after they seized fake visas from Bangladeshis.
A senior officer of the Bangladesh Army, Maj. Gen. Mohammad Humayun Kabir, has been working as the force commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) since October last year.
Cyprus is a major tourist destination in the Mediterranean with an advanced high-income economy and a very high human development index. The country has been a member of the commonwealth since 1961 and was a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement until it joined the EU on May 1, 2004. On January 1, 2008, it joined the eurozone. According to the latest international monetary fund estimates, its per capita GDP (adjusted for purchasing power), at USD 30,769, is just above the average of the European Union. Cyprus has one of the warmest climates in the Mediterranean part of the European Union.
