A jaded and out-of-sort Bangladesh turned up on their first day of the Test on Indian soil as they let the hosts rally towards a mighty total by paying the price of their sloppy fielding and questionable strategy at Hyderabad yesterday. While the expectation was to fight evenly in a historical match, they allowed India to recover from a shaky start to rack up a staggering 356 for three.
After a dreamy first hour, Bangladesh fielders missed at least two genuine chances to produce wickets that resulted in a big partnership to set the tune for India. The horrendous fielding show which haunted them in New Zealand continued and went from bad to worse, giving the hosts a chance to milk runs with ease. To compound the woe, Mushfiqur Rahim once again failed to make the best use of his bowlers strategically when his side was on commanding position following a good work of his new ball bowlers—Taskin Ahmed and Kamrul Islam Rabbi.
Much to the horror of Bangladeshi fans, India captain Virat Kohli was batting on 111 with Ajinkya Rahane on 45 before the umpires took off the bails. Opener Murali Vijay also scored a century to pile a host of misery on Bangladesh who aimed to give a tough fight to the No. 1 side of the world in a bid to reinforce their case of getting more Test matches.
In the first hour of the game, it seemed they were heading towards in right direction as the fast bowlers—Taskin Ahmed and Kamrul Islam Rabbi—produced a top class Test bowling in a wicket that had a tinge of grass.
Taskin was bowling at 140 km consistently while Rabbi complemented him with moving the ball in both ways. Taskin deceived Lokesh Rahul in the just fourth ball of the day with a delivery that swung at 142 km speed. Rahul was left clueless and dragged the delivery on to his stump to give Bangladesh a dreamy start.
Emboldened by the early wicket, Bangladesh pacers created a huge pressure on Indian batsmen and produced another chance through Kamrul Islam Rabbi who got the edge of Cheteshwar Pujara on 11. But neither wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim nor Shakib Al Hasan, stationed at first slip tried to dive their front to take the chance. It was a huge psychological damage that Bangladesh never recovered on the day.
Pujara and Murali Vijay grew with confidence as the fast bowlers started being tired. Mushfiqur took Taskin off the attack but continued with Rabbi even though he looked out-of-sort after the chance created by him was put down.
With the sun broke out and the early moisture of the wicket was dried up, Mushfiqur’s decision to continue with the pacers was questionable. He called up Soumya Sarkar as the first change bowler and Puajra happily took the chance to get him set.
Indian wicket is always helpful for the big turners that Bangladesh is yet to produce. There is only one spinner in the side in Taijul Islam who has reputation of having a big turn but he wasn’t used until the afternoon session. Instead Mushfiqur continued with Mehedi Hasan Miraj and Shakib Al Hasan –both of whom—failed to turn the ball.
With the match continuing to slip away, Bangladesh squandered a golden chance of inflicting a run out on Vijay who was on 35. And that was the last chance Bangladesh created in the dreadful day.
Vijay and Pujara put up a 178-run partnership for the second wicket before the latter was dismissed by a good work of Mushfiqur behind the wicket off Mehedi Hasan Miraj.
Vijay went on to register his ninth century but added just eight runs after the century to be out on 108 after hitting a dozen of boundaries and one six.
Kohli and Rahane then took the charge and played in one-day style to make Bangladesh disarray in an undefeated 122 runs partnership. Just two hours before the end of the day, Kohli brought up his 16th century and fourth in last seven Test with a cracking whip through mid-wicket. He also so far struck 12 fours in an innings of 141 balls. What made the matter worse was that the India scored 71 runs in the last 10 overs of the day.
