At a recent convocation ceremony of a private university, President Abdul Hamid called upon all public and private universities to consider education as a vital means for development and progress of the nation and its citizens, and not to use it as a tool for profiteering. There can be no second opinion to the president’s call.
The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. In fact, it is this crucial aspect that’s been sadly missed in many of our students. The authorities at the country’s schools, colleges and universities must realize this very important matter. More importantly, the countrywide trend of certificate-oriented education, solely based on textbooks must end. Based on this point, all universities must ensure quality of higher education to create creative and enlightened future generations, not textbooks-based human robots.
It’s right here the goal of an academic institution becomes so important. The entrepreneurs will have to keep in mind that a private university is not a place of making money.
A university is not a business entity and its goal must be set for a common purpose - to ensure quality education. We are not saying that tuition fees or organisational profits are not important for running academic institutions, but the point however is that the money should be worth the quality of good and meaningful education.
The education delivered in exchange for money must ensure that a student becomes creative, intelligent and responsible citizen. That said, the purpose of education should not be merely restricted to providing a certificate in order to get a job.
The president further added that university authorities have a responsibility not only for teaching students subject-based textbooks, but also creating the scope of training on humanity, patience, social responsibilities, norms and values. And the key to unlock golden opportunities of the future can be clearly found within these words. Thus, it is up to our universities to deliver higher education to help flourish the inner potentialities, personality, thoughts, social responsibilities and social awareness in a student. All our universities and institutions must respond to the president’s call responsibly.
