Please tell us something about yourself.
I was born in Dhaka on August 1, 1960. I finished my graduation from the Department of Art and Culture at Dhaka University. I have been attracted to theatre since childhood, and now I’m an actor, director and filmmaker.
How did you get into the film industry?
It was a leap of faith. I was an actor, performing on TV and films, who eventually became a director and filmmaker. I will not say that it didn’t scare me. But I had faith in God and myself. My dedication and everyone’s blessings have brought me here.
What inspired you?
I had this dream since the start of my career. I always wanted to make good quality movies for the people of my country. Now, the dream has come true. And most of all, my wife and son inspired me. They always had faith in me.
What is your feeling on receiving award?
I am overwhelmed. It is a great honour. It feels like a joy so deep that time stops for a few seconds and I become the happiest person in the world.
What did you depict in your film?
The film sends a message to the people who are oppressed by tyrant capitalists. It shows how the dark desire for money and power tortures innocent people, who would otherwise be happy with basic needs. It is a common issue for many nations, the conflict exists in different shapes and forms amongst societies.
What kind of films do you prefer making?
I prefer to send a message throughout the film to the audience that will stay forever. The making of the film should match current trends and demands. Categorically, I like action and thrillers.
Initially, what movies moved you most?
Zahir Raihan’s ‘Jibon Theke Neya’, Mel Gibson’s ‘Braveheart’, Naseer Uddin Shah’s ‘Albert Pinto ka Gussa Kyun Aata Hain’ and James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’ amazed me most. But I have been a movie addict since childhood, and I try to watch as many films as possible.
Which section of society do you focus on with your work?
I make an effort to send a message that is universally acceptable to all classes and sections of society. But I dedicate it to the people who can bring changes and revolutionise society and culture.
How important is institutional training for a filmmaker?
God sends everyone with gifts. But it’s our duty to keep it polished as much as possible. That’s what makes us what we want to be. Institutional training is the polish that we must have for making films. It enhances knowledge and efficiency of filmmaking. It is a must.
Tell us about your biggest achievements.
Over the past two decades, I have received many awards, like TENASINAS Award, the biggest TV award in Bangladesh, Bachsas Award, Jhilik Channel-i Award, R-one Independence Award, etc. And now this award, it is also a great achievement.
What types of support would you like to see in this industry?
Sufficient number of movie theatres, with state-of-the-art facilities for people from all walks of life to watch movies. Also, more training institutes are needed in the country to teach on-screen and behind-the-scenes moviemaking techniques.
What is next in line for you?
I have just started my journey. My next plan is to make a sequel movie franchise that would entertain people for years. Still thinking!
Any advice for young filmmakers?
Be patient, and keep faith in yourself. Hard work, confidence and dedication will bring you success.
