2 inmates caned for breaching discipline

Barisal: Amid the widespread outcry over the brutal killing of 13-year-old boy Rajon in Sylhet, two minor female inmates of a government-run Shishu Sadan have been beaten mercilessly for ‘disciplining’ them, reports UNB.
The horrendous incident that happened at Barisal Shishu Sadan run by the Department of Social Services on July 4 came to light after the video clip of the incident went viral on social networking site.
The video footage showed that the two orphan girls—Akhi and Dalia - were being beaten by Mohammad Dulal Miah, health assistant of the children’s house at Amtala intersection in the city, as they tried to flee the home.
Akhi and Dalia have been in the Shishu Sadan for the last four months. On July 4, both of them managed to flee it. However, they were caught again at a mobile shop at Nathulabad bus stand and brought back to the Shishu Sadan.
Health assistant of the shelter home Dulal clubbed the two girls with a tree branch mercilessly, leaving them injured.
Later, the video footage of the incident was uploaded in the Internet which triggered an outcry.
Meanwhile, the Social Welfare Ministry has suspended the health assistant over the incident.
The local administration has also formed a five-member probe committee, headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner, to look into the incident.
The committee has been asked to submit its report within three working days.
