At the invitation of the government of Bangladesh, Chekhov Studio, a prominent theatre troupe from Russia, is now in Bangladesh with its two productions, cast and crew. The troupe will stage two of its popular theatrical productions ‘The Seagull’ and ‘The Bear’ on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segun Bagicha in the capital.
Chekhov Studio is holding a three-day workshop and will stage two plays as a part of an event organised by BSA, in association with Dhaka University and Embassy of Russia in Bangladesh.
Cultural affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor will inaugurate the event as chief guest today at 5:30pm at the BSA’s Nandan Mancha, where Ambassador of Russia to Bangladesh Alexander I Ignatov, Artistic Dean of Russian University of Theatre Arts and Director of the Chekhov Studio Theatre Vladimir Grigorievich Baicher will be present as special guests.
Secretary Ibrahim Hossain Khan, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, will preside over the inauguration programme, while BSA Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky and coordinator of the programme Dr M Israfil Shaheen will deliver speeches.
After the inauguration, the Russian troupe will stage a three-hour performance of its production ‘Chekov O Gangchil’ (The Seagull). The play ‘the Seagull’ consists of four acts.
The play, which was written by Chekhov in 1895, is an open-air setting. The undercurrent focus in these acts is at the time. However, the fourth act shifts to a space inside a theatre building and the time-frame also shifts to early 21st century.
Directed by Vladimir Baicher, the play has been produced by Alexey Litvinov and designed by Vladimir Anshon. The cast of the play includes Alexandr Gryaznov, Leonid Kabargin, Vladimir Simonov, Sergey Bychkov, Boris Dyrchikov, Elena Simonova and others.
Tomorrow, the troupe will stage another production ‘Bholluk’ (The Bear) at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA at 7:30pm. Directed by Bladimir Baichar and Tatyana Fidiyushina, the play stars Marina Suvorova, Sergey Fatyanov and Yury Golyshev.
Besides, the troupe is holding a three-day workshop on February 7, 8 and 10.
On the occasion of the troupe’s visit to Bangladesh and its activities and performances during the tour, a press conference was held yesterday at the Seminar Hall of BSA, where casts and crew of the plays were present along with Ambassador of Russia to Bangladesh Alexander I Ignatov, BSA Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky and Professor of DU Theatre and Performance Studies Department and coordinator of the programme Dr M Israfil Shaheen.
