The White House yesterday released a list of terror attacks it believes did not receive adequate attention from the Western media — including four incidents in Bangladesh.
The release of the list follows US President Donald Trump's unsubstantiated claim on Monday that news outlets were intentionally not covering terrorist attacks in the West, according to different news agencies.
The incidents of Bangladesh listed in the list are as follows:
The holy Artisan Bakery incident in Gulshan in the capital took place in July, 2016.
According to the White House report, 22 were killed, including one American and 50 wounded after hours-long siege using machetes and firearms at holy Artisan Bakery.
The attackers are : Nibras Islam, Rohan Imtiaz, Meer Saameh Mubasheer, Khairul Islam Paye, and Shafiqul Islam Uzzal, the report said.
The killing of one Italian civilian in Dhaka in September , 2015, was included as the second incident and the report said the attacker was yet to be identified.
The third incident was the killing of a Japanese civilian killed in shooting in Rangpur in October, 2015.
And the fourth incident was the killing of an Italisan civilian in shooting in Dinajpur in November 2015.
Asked about the government reaction with regards to the White House report on 78 incidents across the world, including four in Bangladesh, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told The Independent yesterday that the US always highlight Bangladesh negatively.
“All the four issues (involving Bangladesh) mentioned in the White House report were part of a conspiracy. The (Bangladesh) government took necessary actions against those involved with the incidents,” he said.
"All over Europe it's happening. It's gotten to a point where it's not even being reported," Mr Trump said at Central Command headquarters in Florida.
"They have their reasons, and you understand that."
Mr Trump declined to provide an example to support his radical theory of a global media conspiracy to whitewash coverage of terrorism.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer tried to tone down the President’s remarks, saying it was a question of balance: “Like a protest gets blown out of the water, and yet an attack or a foiled attack doesn’t necessarily get the same coverage”.
The White House later sent out a list of 78 terrorist attacks from September 2014 to December 2016 to journalists, claiming it supported Mr Trump’s claim that “most have not received the media attention they deserved”.
