Free and fair polls are not only about the polling day, rather they are the result of a process creating space for parties to compete, media to report impartially and citizens to exercise their freedom of conscience, US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat told The Independent yesterday.
She also stressed on accurate counting of the votes and holing the candidates accountable for their works.
“Free and fair elections are about more than what happens on the day voters go to the polls,” said the US envoy in an email communication when asked for comments about the appointment of new chief election commissioner (CEC) and four election commissioners.
“They are the result of an electoral process that creates the space for parties to compete and debate vigorously, for the media to report impartially, and for citizens to exercise their freedom of conscience, have their votes count, and hold candidates accountable for their words and deeds,” she said.
