RUET teachers’ strike enters 3rd day

5-member probe body formed
A Correspondent, RU

The teachers of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) continued their demonstration boycotting classes on the campus for the 3rd consecutive day yesterday demanding punishment to those agitating students who allegedly confined and assaulted them during a student protest.

RUET Teachers’ Association Prof President Dhirendranath Mustafi declared that they would not return to their classes until proper actions would be taken against those provocateurs who took teachers as hostages in the name of meeting their demands.
On February 4, the agitating students staged a sit-in programme in front of vice-chancellor office and confined VC Prof Mohd Rafiqul Alam Beg and other 25 teachers for 24 hours starting from 2pm, demanding withdrawal of newly adopted ‘33 credit system’ for all academic sessions.  In face students’ ongoing demonstration, the university authorities withdrew the ‘33 credit system’.
RUET VC Dr Rafiqul Alam Beg said a five-member probe body has been formed yesterday. The committee members name will be announced formally within a short time to investigate the matter and punitive action will be taken after receiving the report. He also requested the teachers to withdraw their movement and hoped that they would response his request.
According the 33 credit system, introduced the system in 2012-2013 academic sessions, if a student fails to get 33 out of 40 credits, he or she will not be allowed to move up to next session and will have to retake the whole year again.
Whereas previously, students were allowed to attend classes and examinations of the next session even if they got less than 33 credits. They could obtain the credits by taking examinations later. According to the university sources, each course represents three to five credits.
Earlier, on August 2015, students led by 2013-14 academic session students, besieged the vice-chancellor's office and organised a demonstration programme demanding cancellation of the system.
