Farmers get good yield of onion

Onion production in the district has exceeded the target bringing smile on the face of the farmers in the current season, reports BSS.
Onion, an important ingredient in the list of spices, was cultivated on 29,500 hectares of land exceeding the earlier set target of 27,919 hectares.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said the exceeded target helped produce 10,000 tonnes more onion than expected quantity.
The sources said, the harvest of onion will stand at 3,04,437 tonnes while the original production target was 2,95,941 tonnes.
According to the sources, the upazila wise break- up of onion cultivation and production are as follows. In Sadar upazila it was cultivated on 4,076 hectares which gave yield of 49,224 tonnes, in Char Bhadrasan upazila it was cultivated on 1,150 hectares giving production of 10,710 tonnes. 
In Nagarkanda upazila onion was cultivated on 4,680 hectares of land giving production of 46,206 tonnes of onion In Saltha upazila 8,980 hectares of land were brought under onion cultivation that gave yield of 93,249 tonnes of onion, which is the highest individual production among the upazilas of this district.
In Sadarpur upazila 1,333 hectares of land were brought under onion cultivation that produced 10,697 tonnes. 
In Bhanga upazila 17,490 tonnes of onion was produced on 2,000 hectares of land, the source said. In Madhukhali upazila onion was cultivated on 2,600 hectares of land that produced 24,891 tonnes of onion.
In Boalmari upazila it was cultivated on 4,120 hectares that produced 44,100 tonnes of onion while in Alfadanga upazila onion was produced 7,780 tonnes after cultivating on 561 hectares of land.
DAE sources said, the farmers used quality seed this season and they got other inputs including fertilizer, irrigation facilities and favorable climatic conditions that helped boosting of onion productions.
Besides, the onion seed has been cultivated on 2500 hectares in the district mostly in Sadar and Saltha upazilas, the sources added.
