A bridge built on ‘Suryaduba Khal’ in Gouripur upazila more than three months ago cannot be put in use as the approach road to the bridge is yet to be constructed.
The difficulties suffered by thousands of people of 11 villages of sadar and Gouripur upazilas continue despite the construction of the bridge that involved an amount of Tk 31 lakh.
Hazrat Ali, a resident of Durbar Char village, said: “The bridge has brought no benefit for us as we can not use it for our purposes.”
Abdul Quddus, a van puller, said for lack of proper connecting road traders have to traverse an additional distance of 10 to 20 kiometers to reach Mymensingh town. The villages around the bridge are famous for producing quality vegetables and seasonal fruits that go to Mymensingh and Dhaka, said some farmers.
Ahsan Habib Malek, member of loal Bhangnamari union parishad, said the village people are facing serious troubles in transporting their agricultural produce, especially vegetables.
“Sometimes, we face problem to take serious patients to local health complex and to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital due to the bad communication”, he said.
Mubinur Rahman, project implementation officer (PIO) of Mymensingh sadar, said the construction work of the bridge was completed recently. But due to political rivalry between local union parishad chairman and Awami League men, the work on approach road is being hampered, he said.
The PIO said the road will be constructed soon to make the bridge useful for hundreds of village people.
Denying the political feud, Fazlul Haque Sarker, chairman of local Bhangnamari UP said, the construction of the bridge was completed more than three month ago; but it is best known to the authorities concerned why the approach road is still incomplete.
In the meantime, the contractors drew their bill but auhtorities concenrned is totally indifferent about the huge sufferings of the people, alleged the chairman.
