Bengal Foundation, Britto Arts Trust and the National Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (Bangladesh), in partnership with the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts and the National Culture and Arts Foundation (Taiwan), have jointly organised Asian Curatorial Forum–a discussion on contemporary curatorial practices. The programme will be held in Dhaka from February 9 to 11 at the auditorium of the National Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka. It will gather art professional from 12 Asian countries.
A press conference on the upcoming Asian Curatorial Forum was held yesterday at the Daily Star-Bengal Arts Precinct. Head of Operations of Bengal Foundation Visual Art Programme, Sarwar Jahan Chowdhury, and co-founder of Britto Arts Trust, Mahbubur Rahman, spoke at the press conference about the details of the Forum.
The Asian Curatorial Forum aims to bring fresh perspectives on shared issues in the field of art curating across the continent. The variety of the roles of the curator across distinct institutional systems in Asia–public or private; non-profit or commercial–will constitute the point of focus of the discussions. Relatively recently established across the continent, these systems are porous, and the curator’s many roles across them remain fluid. Discussions at the Forum will examine the impact this fluidity may have on the definition of the curator’s position. They will attempt to re-define the role of the curator so as to better address ambiguities that may exist in the various systems he, or she, operates in. They will endeavour to outline a common definition of what “to curate” could mean today on the continent.
The Asian Curatorial Forum is organised in Bangladesh, a country where the visual arts scene is currently undergoing rapid, radical mutations – and where one therefore needs a strong local curatorial practice to channel this development and maximise its benefits.
