The alleged ringleader of a robbers’ gang was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Mrigamari in Mongla upazila of Bagerhat yesterday, reports UNB.
Deceased Shamsul Haq alias Shamsu, 48, was the chief of a notorious gang ‘Samsu Bahini’ of Arjunbahar village in Sadar upazila.
Commanding officer of RAB-6, Khulna, Khandaker Rafiqul Islam, said a team of RAB-6 conducted a drive in Mrigamari area in the morning.
Sensing the presence of the elite force, the associates of Shamsu opened fire on them, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.
Later the RAB members recovered the bullet-hit body of Shamsu and took it to Mongla Upazila Health Complex where doctors pronounced him dead.
The elite force members also recovered three firearms, 36 bullets and two sharp weapons from the spot.
Two RAB members were injured in the gunfight and they were given first aid.
