Mercury to rise, thunderstorms likely this month

After a mild cold wave in early February, the second half of the month will see 1-2 thunder storms raging across the northern, north-western and central regions of the country as day and night temperatures rise gradually, a monthly weather forecast by the Met Office has said. Barring the Chittagong Division, the remaining parts of the country experienced a light to moderate cold wave between January 7-23.
The cold wave turned severe between January 13 and 24 when the mercury slid below 6 degrees Celsius. On January 14, the country’s lowest temperature of 5C in January was recorded in Rajarhat (Kurigram) and Tetulia (Panchagarh). The cold wave also blew across Tangail, Srimangal, Rajshahi, Pabna, Dinajpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Panchagarh and Chuadanga, where people experienced temperatures of 6 degrees Celcius or below.
The forecast made yesterday noted that the country’s river basins may experience light to moderate fog in the morning. Against a less than normal rainfall in January, the February may experience normal rainfall, the long-range forecast added.
