Bangladesh women’s cricket team got off to a dazzling start as they trounced Papua New Guinea (PNG) by 118 runs in their opener of the Group-B encounter in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier at the Colombo Cricket Club Ground yesterday.
Bangladesh bowled PNG out for a paltry 97 after being set a moderate 216-run target for the latter.
Opted to bat, the Tigress lost their opener Sharmin Sultana as soon as the outset of the proceedings on the Colombo surface. Sharmin rescued the team from the precarious 1-1 situation by piloting a couple of helpful partnerships. Akhter pulled together 51-run with Sanjida Islam (28) for the second wicket and another 69-run with Farzana for the third wicket stand before being dismissed.
Sharmin topscored for Bangladesh with 56 off 86. She blasted seven fours in her 121-minute stay at wickets.
Farzana Haque then tried to stretch the total with fellow batters. After losing skipper Rumana Ahmed, who fell for first ball duck, Haque stitched together 35-run with wicketkeeper-batsman Nigar Sultan (14) for the fifth wicket. Farzana of course completed her half century before being exit. Haque clattered 72-ball 51 that laced with seven fours.
Together with Shaila Sharmin, Salma Khatun hit an unbeaten 55-run for the seventh wicket. Salma remained indefatigable at 32 off 31 with four fours, while Shaila Sharmin was not out on 20 off 28 with a 4.
Ravina Oa, Mairi Tom and Sibona Jimmy snapped up two wickets each for PNG.
Chasing the target, PNG fumbled at losing their openers- Norma Ovasuru and Brenda Tau- in second successive overs by pacers Panna Ghosh and Jahanara Alam inside the initial three overs.
Skipper Pauke Siaka partnered with Tanya Ruma and attempted to tackle the batting collapse. The duo clubbed 57-run for the third wicket partnership. Skipper Rumana Ahmed broke the partnership by sending her rival skipper Saika, who made the highest 32 for the Oceanian side. Ruma followed her skipper at the same margin while they were sprawling at 59 for four. Ruma chipped in with 20.
Since then, Konia Oala tried to steady the innings but none camp up with ably support. As a result, Papua New Guniea wrapped up for scanty 97. Oala went for 29. Jahanara, Panna, Salma and Rumana picked up two wickets apiece for the winners.
