Inflation rises slightly in Jan

The country’s general point to point inflation rate in January increased to 5.15 percentage points from 5.03 percentage points in December 2015 due to the rising trend of the food inflation in both rural and urban areas.

The point to point non-food inflation, however, came down to 3.10 percentage points in January which was 4.49 percentage points in December, 2016, according to the latest Consumer Price Index data of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) released yesterday.
Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal after the ECNEC meeting said the point to point food inflation rate increased to 6.53 percentage points in January up from 5.38 percentage point in December, 2016.
“Inflation increased in January due to price of coarse rice increased in the market and that made an impact” Kamal explained.
However, he said the non-food inflation rate in January did not increase compared to previous month. 
Planning minister is hopeful to keeps the inflation rate under control. 
Besides, the general point to point inflation rate at the urban level decreased to5.57 per cent in January while it was 4.92 per cent at the rural level.
At the rural level, the food inflation increased to 6.28 per cent, down from 4.78 per cent in the previous month, while the non-food inflation decreased to 2.52 per cent in January as against 3.88 per cent in December. 
In urban areas, the food inflation also increased to 7.11 per cent in January, up from 6.07 per cent in December. 
The non-food inflation rate has however come down to 3.35 per cent in January which was 5.35 per cent in December.
The national wage index rate remained unchanged with 6.65 per cent in January and December 2016. 
The average year- to- year rate of inflation from February 2016 to January 2017 stood at 5.43 per cent, which was 6.20 per cent from February 2015 to January 2016.
