A case has been lodged against six persons, including two officers of Barisal Kotwali police station and local AL leaders, for demanding bribes and violating a court order.
Nilufa Begum, wife of the late Abu Sayed Khalifa of C and B Road area in the city, lodged the case with the special judge's court of Barisal on Monday afternoon.
Barisal Kotwali police station officer-in-charge (OC), Narisal Shah Md Awlad Hossain, and sub-inspector (SI) Md Mamun, Dr Anwarullah, his wife Rahima Begum, and local Awami League (AL) leaders Mukib Hossain and Jamaluddin Yusuf have been named as accused in the case statement.
Abdur Rouf Khan, deputy commissioner of the Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP), OC (investigation) Ataur Rahman, and SI Wahab of Barisal Kotwali police station have been named among the witnesses.
Anwarul Huq, judge of the court, gave orders to forward the case to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for investigation. Abdul Kader, bench clerk of the court, said the complainant had been operating a restaurant on a piece of land at C and B Road of the city. A partition suit has been filed at the court about that land and the court has issued permanent injunctions over the property till the disposal of the suit.
However, Dr Anwar, who lives in a neighbouring land, demanded ownership of that piece of land and tried to evict Nilufa with the help of the police in violation of the court order. On January 25, the OC of Barisal Kotwali police station called the complainant to the police station and asked her to vacate the land.
Nilufa refused to do so, as the land's valuation would be more than Tk. 1 crore. Moreover, as the matter was sub judice, it is not under the jurisdiction of the police, she argued.
The OC and another officer had taken Tk. 10 lakh from Dr Anwar for vacating the land, the complainant alleged.
Nilufa immediately informed other police officials, named as witnesses, about the matter. Then the accused, in association with other miscreants, ransacked the house and restaurant on January 26. They also beat and injured Nupur, daughter of the complainant, and implicated her in a false case against six family members of Nilufa lodged by Mukib Hossain on January 27. They even sent Nupur to jail.
Now, the police are harassing other family members of the complainant, according to the case statement.
