HC issues rule on bail for 20 prisoners

The High Court (HC) yesterday issued a rule asking concerned lower courts to explain why it shall not grant bail to 20 people languishing in jail for more than a decade without trial, reports BSS.
Two division benches of High Court issued the rule acting suo moto. The High Court benches also ordered the jail authorities to produce 10 prisoners on February 23, five on February 26, and other five on February 28 before them with their case documents.
Panel lawyer of Supreme Court Legal Aid Office (SCLAO) Syeda Sabina Ahmed Moli brought the sufferings of 10 such inmates in Sylhet and Khulna divisions to court's attention yesterday.
Holding primary hearing on the matter, a High Court division bench comprising Justice Md. Nuruzzaman and Justice SH Md Nurul Huda Jaigirdar issued a rule, asking the prison authorities to produce the inmates on February 23.
Meanwhile, another panel lawyer of SCLAO, advocate Anis Ul Mawa brought the plight of ten inmates in Mymensingh, Rajshahi and Khulna jails to the High Court yesterday.
After holding hearing on the matter, Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Krishna Debnath issued separate rule on the bail of those other ten.
