Will work neutrally: Huda

In an immediate reaction after being appointed the country’s new chief election commissioner (CEC), former secretary KM Nurul Huda yesterday sought cooperation from all stakeholders, including the political parties, members of the civil society and the mass media, in discharging his duties imperially.
“I am very grateful to the president for appointing me the CEC. It is a constitutional position. I will discharge the constitutional responsibilities neutrally,” he told The Independent in his instant reaction.
Meanwhile, election commissioner Begum Kabita Khanam, a former district and sessions judge, expressed her optimism that the new Election Commission (EC) would be able to fulfill the peoples’ expectation of holding a free, fair and credible general election scheduled to be held in 2019.
“I will try to discharge my duty accordingly and I hope we can fulfill the peoples’ expectation of holding a fair election,” she told The Independent in her instant reaction. Extending thanks to President Abdul Hamid, Kabita said, “Becoming an honorable member of the Election Commission is amatter of great joy.”
“As a person of law, I will work in line with the laws and regulations concerned,” she added.
The tenures of the incumbent chief election commissioner and three of his colleagues will expire on February 8, while the tenure of another election commissioner expires on 14 February.
