Veteran Awami League leader and parliamentarian Suranjit Sengupta was cremated at his ancestral home in Derai upazila of Sumanganj yesterday. The body of the veteran political leader arrived in Sylhet from Dhaka earlier in the day. A helicopter carrying the body touched down Sylhet Osmani International airport around 10:30am. Suranjit’s wife, his only son, AL Joint Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, and Organising Secretary Ahmed Hossain accompanied the body.
On arrival, the body was kept on the Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar premises where people, including politicians, paid homage to Suranjit. Later, the body was taken to Derai around 3pm for funeral.
Meanwhile, the cabinet yesterday adopted a condolence motion over the death of Suranjit.
The motion was adopted in a regular cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Cabinet Secretary M Shafiul Alam told reporters after the meeting.
Cabinet members recalled Suranjit’s contribution to parliamentary affairs and politics during the discussion session.
The Awami League Advisory council member Suranjit Sengupta died while undergoing treatment at Labaid Hospital in the capital around 04:24 am on Sunday.
Suranjit, also a member of the country's constitution formulation committee and a freedom fighter, died at Labaid Hospital in the capital early Sunday after a year’s battle against cancer.
