Though facing a shortage of coaches, Bangladesh Railway (East Zone) started passenger trains for Eid-ul-Fitr from Monday. The BR (East Zone) traffic department sources also confirmed that without adding additional coaches, the trains started carrying the passengers of Eid-ul-Fitr. Still a total of 42 coaches were short on inter-city trains and mail trains of different routes of East Zone, till yesterday, 3pm, said railway traffic sources. Earlier, the BR declared they were going to add 90 new coaches to different trains, to ease the pressure of home-goers during the upcoming Eid-Ul-Fitr.
However, Mozammel Haque, general manager of BR 9 East Zone did not accept any shortage of coaches. He said, all the declared 90 coaches will be added today. Interestingly, at the time of filing this report, 42 inter-city and second class coaches were short on different trains. The officials of the BR (East Zone) traffic however said, on condition of anonymity that information about 90 coaches being added was wrong. Moreover, the railway workshop could not supply coaches as per their declaration and had only got a total of 67 coaches till 3pm on Tuesday. When contacted, Fakir Mohiuddin, BR workshop manager Phartali told The Independent that “We are repairing the old dilapidated coaches to for the trains. We have repaired a total of 90 coaches and till July 3, have already supplied 67 coaches. The remaining coaches will be added soon.”
Two coaches were reportedly short for Kalni Express on the Dhaka-Sylhet route, two for Upaban Express, one coach for Jaynatica Express, one coach for Turna Nishita Express, two coaches for Udyan-Pharika Express, three coaches for Meghana, two coaches for Upakul Express, three coaches for Rangpur Express, two coaches for Kishoreganj Express and one coach is short for Bijoy Express, said BR East Zone sources.
On the other hand, with regard to the inter-city trains on Dhaka-Sylhet, Dhaka-Rangpur routes, a standard composition of coaches was missing. In these routes, most of the inter-city trains were running with scarcity of coaches, said the BR traffic. However, the traffic department said, in trains like Subarna Express, Godhuli Express and Turna Express there were supposed to be 18 coaches. But with addition of two more coaches, these trains now were running with 20 coaches.
When contacted Mofizur Rahman, Divisional Manager, BR (East Zone) told The Independent, “These are not new coaches. Many coaches were cut off from the trains as these were under repair in the workshop. He added, “Ahead of Eid, after repairing the decrepit coaches, we will add these coaches to the trains.”
