The amount of idle money in the state-owned six banks stood at Tk 1,226 crore on December 31, 2016, Finance Minister AMA Muhith told Parliament yesterday, reports UNB.
Besides, the amount of idle money is Tk 149 crore and Tk 15 crore in two specialized banks Bangladesh Krishi Bank and Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank respectively, he said replying to an unstarred question from ruling Awami League MP M Abdul Latif (Chittagong-11).
Among the six state-owned banks, the amount of idle money was Tk 466 crore in Sonali Bank, Tk 299 crore in Janata Bank, Tk 236 crore in Agrani Bank, Tk 144 core in Rupali Bank, Tk 71 crore in Basic Bank and Tk 10 crore in Bangladesh Development Bank, Muhith said.
Replying to a supplementary question, the finance minister said the government firmly hangs onto the claim that Pakistan owes to Bangladesh under different heads, including donation, reserve and compensations for damage and casualties in 1971.
Noting that Bangladesh designed the claim on the basis of four issues, he said Bangladesh's share in the reserve is small, which might be maximum US$ 100 crore. But compensation is much bigger due to colossal damages and huge casualties in Bangladesh.
"We placed our claim. We are firmly determined to realise our claim. The government will continue its effort to materialise the claim as long as Awami League will be in power," Muhith said.
