Local activists of the ruling Awami League (AL), who are organising an agitation over a set of demands, including jobs for themselves, blocked the main gate of Rajshahi University (RU) around 8am yesterday.
They later brought out a rally led by AL Motihar thana unit general secretary Md. Alauddin. The rally by the leaders and activists marched through different roads. The procession ended at the main gate of the campus. No vehicle could be seen entering or leaving the campus.
Md. Alauddin said: "We urged the authorities to postpone the exams as we had demanded that the recruitment age limit be extended. The current age limit of 30 years has created hindrances for the appointments of a good number of candidates. However, the authorities refused to pay heed to our proposal.”
The general secretary of the RU Teachers’ Association said: “They have no right to block the campus with their illegal demands. The government should suspend them for their activities.”
The RU vice-chancellor said: “Some local AL men demanded 4th Grade jobs. But it is quite impossible to offer them such jobs in violation of the 1973 university Act since it is an autonomous campus.”
The activists had allegedly locked the gates of the campus first on 23 November. They were led by leaders and activists of the Rajshahi Metropolitan, Motihar thana and university units of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). On that day, they had also blockaded the exam hall and different gates of the university and organised demonstrations on the Rajshahi-Dhaka highway route for a couple of hours.
