Renowned athlete Doly Catherin Cruz passed away at her Tezturipara residence in the city at the early hours yesterday. She was 72.
She won 50 gold medals in international and domestic competitions spanning more than 30 years – 1956 to 1990.
The national award holder Doly Cruz was also vice-president of the Bangladesh Women Sports Association.
Besides athletics, she also won gold medal in swimming, cycling, badminton while she also played volleyball and hockey in her colourful career.
But her main event was javelin throwing and took part in the sprints and hurdles. She won five gold medals participating in as many time in the then Pakistan Olympic.
