The Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) authorities yesterday evening suspended the academic activities for the academic session 2014-15 (14 series) and 2015-16 (15 series) for an indefinite period following the on going students’ movement demanding cancellation of newly adopted credit system.
But students of these sessions continued their demonstration programme for the 5th consecutive day and more than thousand students have confined Vice-Chancellors (VC’s) office till filling the report. Additional police have also been deployed on the campus to avoid any untoward situation.
RUET registrar Prof Mosharaf Hossain said university authorities have taken this decision at an emergency academic council meeting, where vice-chancellor Prof Rafiqul Alam Bag was in chair, as the students continues their illogical movements. The authorities also asked the students to leave their respective halls by Tuesday 10am.
The agitated students expressed their anger on the decision of suspending their academic activities. Mahedei Hasan, one of the protesters, said they will continue their movements until their demand is met.
According to the university sources, a student has to achieve minimum 33 credits out of 40 in the ‘33 credit system’. If the student fails to do so, he or she will not be allowed to move up to next session and has to retake the whole year.
Whereas previously, students were allowed to attend classes and examinations of the next session even if they got less than 33 credits. They could obtain the credits by taking examinations later. But the RUET authorities cancelled the system in a 2013-14 academic year. According to the university sources, each course represents three to five credits.
Earlier, the students of different departments of academic sessions 2014-15 (14 series) and 2015-16 (15 series) staged demonstration on the campus demanding cancellation of newly adopted credit system.
Humayan Kabir, officer-in-charge of Motihar Police station, said, “We have deployed additional law enforcers to avoid any untoward situation”.
RUET VC Prof Rafiqul Alam Bag did not receive his phone when this correspondent tried to reach him over phone several time.
