RANGPUR: Hundreds of people of remote Tepakharibari union under Dimla upazila in Nilphamari have been constructing two-kilometre flood control embankment at their own to protect the area from floods and river erosion, reports BSS.As the rainy season marches nearer and authorities concerned did not take initiative so far to protect nearly 20,000 families, arable land and properties of the area from floods and erosion of the Teesta, the local people have started to do the same at their own.
Talking to local reporters, Member of the Parliament from Nilphamri-1 constituency Aftab Uddin Sarker said about 20,000 families, their houses and cultivable lands, schools, mosques and madrashas of the area would be saved from floods and erosions.
General Secretary of Tepakharibari union unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League and coordinator of the embankment construction committee Moynul Islam said common people of the area were extending assistance and taking part in the construction works.
“The local men, women, day-labourers, fishermen, adolescents, carpenters, teachers, students, youths, religious and community leaders and public representatives have been taking part in the embankment construction works,” he said. The local people, educational institutions and other organisations have also been donating bamboos, plastic ropes and physical labours without wages to complete the construction work as soon as possible before the next seasonal floods.
“After construction of the embankment, over 20,000 families living in Char Kharibari, Ekotar Bazar, Purbo Kharibari, Jhinjhir Para, Tapur Char, Saniyazan, Thengjhar and Bagher Char villages would be saved from floods and erosion of the Teesta,”Moynul added. Local inhabitant Abdul Baten, who came to the spot with the youths to take part in the construction works, expressed dissatisfaction over lack of timely initiative of the Water Development Board for constructing the embankment.“Hundreds of houses, vast tract of cultivable land, roads and other properties would be saved as the embankment will prevent floods and erosion of the Teesta that makes hundreds of people homeless every year,” Baten added.
Local people Abul Kalam, Hsmat Ali, Nur Islam, Rafikul Haque, Masud Ahmed, Nur Hossain and many others of different villages have also been taking part spontaneously in the embankment construction works.
Local school students Abu Bakar, Abdus Sobhan, Sukumar and many others said that they were feeling proud for taking part in the construction works of the embankment to protect their village from floods and erosion.
