Central leaders of the Awami League (AL), including its general secretary Obaidul Quader, are touring districts in a bid to make the party popular in preparation for the 2019 general election. They have been instructed to do so by party president Sheikh Hasina. The leaders have been told to project the government’s success stories. Party insiders said the central leaders are telling grassroots-level leaders not to get involved in criminal activities or internal conflicts.
The main objective is to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots level by minimising intra-party feud and to mobilise public opinion in favour of the AL's symbol, "Nouka". The leaders will visit the party’s 78 organisational districts, right down to the upazila level.
Talking to this correspondent, AL organising secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim said: “The whole exercise is meant to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots level.”
By highlighting the government’s development activities and by minimising intra-party feud, the party can be made more acceptable to the people, he noted.
“This move is to unite party leaders and workers at the grassroots level. At some places, party leaders have become divided over the latest local government elections. Such fissures would be minimised by our tours,” said the AL's joint general secretary, Abdur Rahman.
The party's organising secretary Enamul Haque Shamim, who has been given the charge of Chittagong division, said: “Barring some districts, we have completed our
organisational tours in my division. I hope we will be able to complete our tours in the division within this month.”
Obaidul Quader, along with other central leaders, is presently visiting Noakhali district. Recently, the party’s central leaders, led by its general secretary, visited the country’s northern district of Bogra and held several meetings there.
After the visit, Abu Sufian Shafiq, a thana level leader of the AL of the district, told The Independent that the central leaders had instructed them not to get involved in criminal activities and intra-party feud ahead of the next polls.
“The leaders asked us to establish mass contact by going from door-to-door and making people understand that the government is working for the betterment of the country. We have also been told that under no circumstances should we misbehave with people,” he said.
The AL’s organising secretary for Dhaka division, Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, said: “We are basically carrying out countrywide tours for strengthening our organisation at the grassroots level. There are no full committees in many districts. We are working on the issue through our tours.”
The AL’s joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif told The Independent: “Yes, we have started visiting different divisions to strengthen the organisation and to project the government’s success stories before the masses. Party leaders will visit all organisational districts across the country.”
The party high-ups have distributed divisional responsibilities among its four joint general secretaries and eight organising secretaries.
The joint general secretaries have been appointed for two divisions each. Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif has been entrusted with the responsibilities of Chittagong and Sylhet, Dipu Moni of Dhaka and Mymensingh, Jahangir Kabir Nanak of Rangpur and Rajshahi, and Abdur Rahman of Barisal and Khulna. Among the organising secretaries, Ahmed Hossain will be looking after Sylhet, Misbah Uddin Siraj, Mymensingh, BM Mozammel Huq, Rangpur, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Barisal, AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, Chittagong, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Rajshahi, Abu Saeed Al Mahmud Swapan, Khulna, and Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury has been given the responsibility of Dhaka.
Of late, intra-party feuds at the grassroots level of the AL have taken a serious turn across the country. Party activists are engaged in infighting either to establish supremacy in their respective areas or grab party posts. Such infighting has escalated after the union parishad elections. Even the party’s associate bodies have been affected by such feuds.
