3.5 lakh workers sans papers to get scope for job

PM tells parliament about Bangladeshis in Malaysia

Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said that some 3.5 lakh undocumented Bangladeshis living in Malaysia would get scope for work there since the Malaysian government has declared to issue temporary work pass for the undocumented expatriate workers,
reports BSS.
"Following the telephonic conversation between Malaysian prime minister and me on January 15, 2017, the Malaysian government has announced to issue temporary work pass for the undocumented expatriate workers. As a result, some 3.5 lakh undocumented Bangladeshi workers would get scope to work there," she said.
The leader of the house said this while replying to a starred tabled question from ruling party MP Kamal Ahmed Mazumder (Dhaka-15) in parliament during her scheduled question-answer session this evening.
Sheikh Hasina also said that otherwise those undocumented Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia would have returned to the country.
She said that following the successful diplomatic efforts of the present government, steps have been taken to provide legality to some 8 lakh undocumented expatriate Bangladeshi workers in Saudi Arabia, some 2.67 lakh expatriate Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia and some 10,000 undocumented Bangladeshi workers in Iraq.
The prime minister said that the timeframe for recruiting manpower under the Rehiring Programme of Malaysia has been extended by another six months from December 31 last year.
"Already over 2 lakh undocumented Bangladeshi workers have registered under this programme and due to the time extension," she said, adding the rest of some 1.5 lakh Bangladeshi workers would

be able to do registration to gain necessary documents. Meanwhile, the premier said the feasibility  study work on construction of the Bangabandhu International Airport would begin soon.
"The feasibility study work on construction of the Bangabandhu International Airport on the other side of Padma Bridge in Madaripur would commence soon," she said while replying to starred tabled question of Jatiya Party MP Nurul Islam Omar (Bogra-6) during her question-answer session.
The premier said the present government has been working with a commitment to build a non-communal, progressive, modern and democratic Bangladesh free from hunger and poverty.
Sheikh Hasina said 10 infrastructure projects have been included as the "fast track projects".
The schemes, she said, are Padma Bridge, Rooppur Power Plant, Rampal Coal-based Power Plant, Deep Seaport, Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit, LNG Floating, Storage and Regasification, Matarbari Coal-fired Power Plant, Payra Seaport, Padma Bridge Rail Link and Dhaka-Cox's Bazar Rail Line.
The leader of the house said the work on Padma Bridge in the country's own funding is going on fast, while the work on 2nd Kachpur, 2nd Gumti and 2nd Meghnaghat will start soon.
