The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) yesterday (Wednesday) arrested four suspected members of a new faction of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (Neo JMB) from the city's Jatrabari area.
They were identified as Md Ashfak-e-Azam, alias Apel, Mahbubur Rahman, Ashraf and Shaniuzzaman.
The police also seized firearms and a large quantity of explosives from a house in the Dholaipar area early yesterday.
They recovered two pistols, 21 rounds of ammunition, four sharp weapons, gun powder and bomb-making materials, said RAB-10 chief Jahangir Hossain Matubbar. "Following the recent crackdown by law enforcers, the militants were scattered. We received information that they are regrouping," he added.
Ashfak had a master's degree in computer from a private university. He worked at different places. He has been involved with the JMB since 2011. Shahinuzzaman, another active member of the group, took militant training, along with others, at a house in Mirpur and some areas in Chittagong. He received training in the use of small firearms, RAB claimed.
According to RAB, Ashfak sustained a bullet wound on the leg during training. RAB Director (legal and media wing) Mufti Mahmud Khan said: ‘‘All those detained belong to the JMB’s Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury and Sarwar Jahan faction. We suspect that Apel is the head of the IT section of the group. They rented the house on January 23, identifying themselves as construction workers. They were stocking arms and explosives there. We suspect that they were planning some attacks. Two of them came to rent the house identifying themselves as brothers. They told the house owner that they would fill up the Tenant Information form on February 1.”
“A team of RAB came around 4am and asked one of our ground-floor tenants to open the collapsible gate,” a resident of the house said.
The police also detained the house owner, Sailu Begum, 45, and the ground-floor tenant, Faruk, for interrogation, said Saber Hossain Anas, younger son of the house owner.
A case has been filed and the process to hand over the suspected militants was on at the time of filing of this report around 6pm.
